Fitzsimmons Creek Bridge - Whistler BC
North America's largest ski resort in Whistler,
British Columbia required a new bridge over
the Fitzsimmons Creek.
Steel pile foundations would be utilized to
support the bridge abutments. Prior to pile
driving. a loose layer of course sand and gravel
had to be densified to avoid liquefaction during
a seismic event. A protection dyke consisting
of 509-508 diameter driven gravel cores was
designed to surround the abutment
foundations and eliminate the possibility of
lateral spreading into the adjacent creek.
The driven system was selected because of it's
ability to penetrate the difficult cobble and
boulder layers existing in the soil profile typical
of these mountain streams.
